The New York Times, August 1965: Johnson Signs Voting Rights Bill, Orders Immediate Enforcement

Friends, on this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the landmark Voting Rights Act into law — transforming what voting access and political representation looked like in the United States. 

For generations, we counted on the Voting Rights Act to safeguard the voting power of minority communities. With a ban on literacy tests, protections against racial gerrymandering and vote dilution, and a mechanism to enforce those protections, this legislation helped guarantee equal representation.

Today, as we regroup after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, we must remember the progress that was made and what it took to win it. We must be as determined and as strategic as our civil rights forebears. Democracy depends on it.

On that very day 61 years ago, anti-democracy forces didn’t wave a white flag. They started a decades-long fight to undo that hard-fought progress, because fairness threatened their power. They chipped away and focused on finding and funding legal cases – and judges – that would dismantle the Voting Rights Act. 

Look, I won’t sugarcoat it: The last year has been rough. 

And yet this grassroots movement has not given up.

Together, we know the American people don’t want racial or partisan gerrymanders. They don’t want hurdles blocking the ballot box. What they want is representation that actually represents all of us . 

We’ve stopped anti-democracy forces from gerrymandering in states like Indiana and South Carolina. Our movement has taken to courtrooms to push back against other unconstitutional redraws and efforts to undermine the census. Supporters have sent thousands of messages to elected officials, shown up at their legislatures, and signed up to be poll watchers this fall.
