I have listened to feedback from residents that the standards across the city centre are not what people expect, that is why my number one priority is to make Nottingham a cleaner, safer and more welcoming city for everyone as we lead Nottingham forward.

This week I launched the Respect for Nottingham Board. The Board brings together key partners from across the city to coordinate action on the issues that matter most to local people, tackling anti-social behaviour, community safety, neighbourhood pride and respect for our shared public spaces.

By working collectively, we can deliver stronger and more visible improvements for residents, businesses and visitors and I was delighted to be joined by business owners across Hockley for my first walkabout this week. An important part of this work is the new city centre Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which came into effect on 27 July. The PSPO provides additional tools to help tackle behaviours that negatively affect people's experience of the city centre and supports our wider efforts to create a safer environment for all.

We are also encouraging residents to take part in the current consultation on a proposed extension to the PSPO relating to face coverings. The proposal would allow authorised officers to require the removal of a face covering where there are reasonable grounds to believe it is being used to conceal identity while committing crime, anti-social behaviour, intimidation or harassment. It is important to note that this is not a blanket ban and would not apply to legitimate religious, cultural, health, work or safety-related face coverings. The consultation remains open until midnight on 14 August, and I encourage everyone to have their say.

Finally, we are working on our next submission on LGR and warding arrangements which looks at a reduction in elected members, with more money for local services. There is plenty happening across Nottingham over the coming weeks, including activities for families throughout the summer holidays, community events in our neighbourhoods, and free-swimming sessions for under-16s at participating leisure centres.

Carnival
One week to go until Nottingham Carnival??

Nottingham's biggest Caribbean cultural event returns to Victoria Embankment on Sunday 16 August from 1pm-8pm.

Within the Carnival Village, you’ll find live performances and DJ sets, mouthwatering Caribbean food, a licensed bar, fairground rides, and good vibes for all ages! The line-up includes celebrated Jamaican artist Duane Stephenson, plus a new stage takeover hosted by Jungle Love – a regular feature of Nottingham Carnival in the 90s – featuring heavyweight jungle sounds, legendary selectors, and rising local talent.

The colourful Carnival Parade will once again feature spectacular costumes and choreography, and is free to watch at any point along the route from 2pm.

Advance tickets are priced at £8 (adults 17+) and £4 (children 12-16) plus booking fees. Children 11 and under are free.

Waste and recycling
??️Waste & recycling consultation ends next Friday (14 August)


Residents are encouraged to share their views on proposed waste and recycling collection options before the consultation closes next Friday, 14 August.

Your views will help shape future decisions on how household waste and recycling are collected across the city, including the types of containers used, which materials are collected separately and how often collections take place. 

The consultation builds on feedback gathered from residents in 2022, which helped to inform the Council’s Waste and Recycling Strategy.


The survey is available online, with paper copies and accessible formats also available on request. If you live in Nottingham, don’t miss the opportunity to help shape waste and recycling services in your community.

Face coverings consultation
Consultation launched on proposed city centre face-covering restriction


People who live, work in and visit Nottingham are being invited to have their say on proposals relating to the use of face coverings in the city centre. 

Nottingham City Council has launched a two-week consultation on a proposed addition to the city centre Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which came into effect on 27 July. 

Under the proposal, an authorised officer could require someone to remove a face covering if they reasonably believed it was being used to conceal their identity for the purpose of committing crime or anti-social behaviour, or causing intimidation, harassment, alarm or distress.

Big Conversation on Care
Big Conversation on Care launches

People across England are being invited to take part in the Big Conversation on Care, a national engagement programme that will help shape the future of adult social care. The initiative forms part of the work of the independent Casey Commission, led by Baroness Louise Casey, which is exploring how social care should change to meet the needs of current and future generations. 

Adult social care supports millions of people, including older people, disabled people and those living with long-term health conditions, helping them to live independently and safely.  

The Big Conversation aims to gather views from people who use care and support services, unpaid carers, care professionals and the wider public about what good care should look like in the future.  

Feedback will be collected through an online platform, community engagement activities and a Public Panel on Care. The insights gathered will help inform the Commission’s recommendations to Government on reforming adult social care in England. 

Whether you draw on care and support, care for someone else, work in the sector or simply have an interest in the future of care, your views matter.

Cllr Mellen, free swimming sessions
??Free school-holiday swimming sessions for under-16s live across Nottingham

Nottingham City Council’s free-swimming campaign for under-16s is now live, providing free swimming spaces during school holidays from July 2026 to February 2027. Backed by £197,000 of investment, the programme is helping more children and young people across the city access swimming.

In the first week of free-swimming sessions, *1,396 children took part across the city*. Since bookings opened on 20 July, *3,511 free-swimming bookings* have been made for sessions throughout the school holidays.

The scheme runs across 49 school holiday days, offering free, structured public swimming sessions at all six Active Nottingham leisure centres, which are part of Nottingham City Council: Clifton, Djanogly, Harvey Hadden Sports Village, Ken Martin, Southglade and Victoria Leisure Centre.

Travel Well pop-up stand moves on to the Forest Rec!

Our fantastic Travel Well pop-up stand has moved to its third location of the summer - the Forest Recreation Ground.

As before, there are a host of free activities, including led walks and cycle rides, bike-building workshops and maintenance sessions.

These are open to all, but with a particular emphasis on those currently not in education, training or employment. The stand started out on the Embankment and moved to the Beechdale Road shops before arriving at the Forest on Monday. It will relocate to St Ann's in a few weeks.
