The SAVE Act is already notorious because it’s designed to make voting more difficult for millions of Americans. And Donald Trump is obsessed with getting it through Congress before the midterms.
For now, though, our grassroots movement has blocked it from passing — but not as many people know about a different threat to democracy that’s also called “SAVE.”
It’s the other side of the same anti-voter coin.
It’s a Trump administration project that doesn’t have to get through Congress.
And even though the courts have so far stopped it from taking full effect, it’s already in place for four crucial states this November: Ohio, Florida, Iowa, and Indiana.
The “Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements” system lets states use faulty federal data to screen and potentially purge eligible voters from the rolls if they don’t take action to show their papers.
The federal judge who blocked SAVE’s use said, “the federal government has knowingly trampled on the privacy rights of American citizens in a manner that threatens the sacred right to vote. This Court cannot stand idly by while that happens.”
All in all: It’s another way to throw more obstacles in front of the ballot box, fueled by the same conspiracy theories — the same myths about widespread noncitizen voting — as the SAVE Act.
Clearly, the far right’s leading electoral strategy is to cheat, whether by restricting access to the ballot box or engaging in blatant new gerrymanders. The courts may still block the SAVE system from being used against voters in those four states. But no matter what, we can all see the risks. We expect to face escalating attacks on free and fair elections, from voter-suppression laws to a worsening nationwide redistricting crisis.
And we’ll have to continue fighting for the right of the American people to participate fully in their democracy.

* Providing critical, timely voting information to Americans who’ve suddenly had their access to the ballot — or their voting maps — altered.
* Registering voters so the will of the people can be heard.
* Recruiting poll workers who can counter worst-case-scenario efforts to mislead, intimidate, or block voters from being heard this November.
* Rallying the American people behind fair maps that give everyone an equal voice in our democracy.
