John,
Today, five-year-old Qamar looks forward to going to her learning sessions every morning. She laughs with her friends, expresses her feelings and feels safe enough to play.
It wasn't always this way.

When Qamar was just two years old, she and her mother, Shatha, were forced to leave their home in Khan Younis, Gaza, after an evacuation order left them with no choice but to flee. Today, they live in a tent in a displacement camp.
Growing up surrounded by shelling took a profound toll on Qamar. She became withdrawn and fearful, refused to speak and would not play with other children.
Because of supporters like you, the IRC was there when Qamar needed help most. But today, millions of children living through conflict are still waiting for that same chance.
Shatha enrolled Qamar in Hope for Tomorrow, an early childhood development program that helps children learn, play and begin to heal after crisis.
Through play-based and social-emotional learning, Qamar slowly began to express her emotions again. She started playing with other children, making friends and looking forward to her sessions every morning.
"Qamar gradually began to feel safe again," Shatha told us.
Today, more than 400 million children living through crisis have no classroom to return to. The IRC is helping children learn, heal and recover through safe spaces, trained teachers and support for parents—but we urgently need your help to reach more children.
