Todd Blanche continues making the case against his own confirmation.

While his nomination is hanging by a thread, Blanche told anti-abortion
faith leaders that the Justice Department was preparing to help roll back
abortion access nationwide. He said the Trump administration was working
“hand in hand” to make the Dobbs decision “permanent in every single
state,” promised that “victory will be soon,” and described policies
intended to stop abortion medication from reaching patients in states with

Now the Senate could vote to advance his nomination as attorney general as
soon as this Friday.

This was more than inflammatory rhetoric. Blanche’s Justice Department is
reviewing a 2022 legal opinion that rejected using the 150-year-old
Comstock Act to prosecute providers for mailing abortion medication.
Reversing that opinion could clear the way for the Trump administration to
use the law to restrict delivery of abortion pills across the United
States, threatening access even in states where abortion remains
protected.

Blanche did not reveal this agenda when senators pressed him publicly
during his confirmation hearing. But in private, he assured anti-abortion
activists that federal action was coming soon.

Blanche has also made clear that his loyalty is to Trump, not the law, the
constitution, or the American people. He told the callers that he had been
late because he was updating Trump, adding that when the president calls,
“I answer.”

The attorney general is supposed to defend the Constitution and enforce
the law independently, not use the Justice Department to carry out the
president’s demands or help anti-abortion extremists impose their agenda
nationwide.

Senator Susan Collins has already announced that she will oppose Blanche.
If just one more Republican opposes him, Blanche’s nomination can be
defeated. This is a winnable fight, but senators need to hear overwhelming
opposition now.

We cannot allow the Senate to hand control of the Justice Department to
someone who will use the Justice Department to attack Trump’s perceived
enemies and who has privately promised an imminent nationwide assault on
abortion access.
