The Voting Rights Act of 1965 marked a new beginning for American democracy. It was a chance for Black Americans who’d been disenfranchised under Jim Crow to finally have the representation they deserved in the halls of power.

But now we’re witnessing a grim return to an ugly era — through egregious racial gerrymanders that Republicans have enacted to dilute the power of Black and brown voters.

Take it from a recent op-ed in The Washington Post:

"After six decades of access to democracy and representation in the republic, the South is backsliding and re-creating racial disparity — not through violence or literacy tests, but through redistricting and an acceptance that some communities will be left behind.”

There’s a key word in that quote: “acceptance.” “The acceptance that some communities will be left behind.”

At the National Democratic Redistricting PAC, we absolutely refuse to accept this shameful new status quo. And we are leading the charge to stop partisan and racial gerrymandering that stifles the will of the people. Will you make a donation to fuel this democracy-saving work? [[link removed]]

Representative democracy is slipping away in the American South, right before our eyes. But it’s not inevitable. And we aren’t just bystanders.

Republican politicians — and their judicial enablers — want us to think it’s perfectly acceptable to drown out the voices of Black and brown voters, as long as they can claim that maps are only being manipulated for partisan gain. As that Washington Post op-ed put it: “It is simply the modern way to achieve an age-old objective: not winning over independent swing voters but winning by any means necessary."

They want us to accept that it’s OK for maps to deny equal representation to people of color, as long as it’s supposedly just collateral damage in the effort to help Republicans hold on to power.

That doesn’t pass the smell test. And if enough of us don’t push back in moments like this, “acceptance” gives way to a new reality.
