Friend – Enough is enough. Last week, a white nationalist murdered two protestors demanding justice for Jacob Blake, the 29-year-old shot seven times in the back by Kenosha police. Kenosha Sheriff David Beth and Police Chief Daniel Miskinis allowed police to fraternize with white supremacist counter-protestors that night and let the shooter leave, even as other protestors desperately yelled that he was responsible for the shootings. It's crystal clear: Sheriff Beth and Chief Miskinis must be held responsible for the attempted murder of Jacob Blake and the murders of these protestors.
Both Sheriff Beth and Chief Miskinis' actions are inexcusable. Sheriff David Beth's deputies allowed this white supremacist shooter to leave the scene, and the sheriff rationalized this at a press conference by saying his deputies may not have paid attention because it was a "high-stress" situation. Chief Miskinis shifted the blame onto protestors, claiming the shooting might not have happened if protestors weren't "out after the curfew." We are tired of excuses – law enforcement officials continue to avoid responsibility for the dangerous, racist actions that police carry out on the field. Sheriff Beth and Chief Miskinis' actions uphold and defend white supremacy while demonizing people who were murdered for exercising their First Amendment rights and speaking out against police violence. The most impactful thing you can do to support on-the-ground efforts in Wisconsin is to call for the removal of Sheriff Beth and Chief Miskinis.
