We’re a month away from the most important election of our lives (the first mail-in ballots go out in early October!) At ISF, our members are busy text banking, phone banking, letter writing, researching, and pressuring our Members of Congress to fight back against attempts to destabilize the election.

Tell Speaker Pelosi or Representative Speier: Make sure EVERY VOTE COUNTS!
We are continuing to monitor ways in which Trump and the Republicans could try to rig and steal the November 3 election. We wrote a blog post on the many stratagems, and we’ve been asking you to call your Members of Congress and demand they fight against this blatant subversion of democracy.
This week, we want to address one specific concern with vote-by-mail ballots. Postmaster General DeJoy can use the "postmarked by" deadline to disqualify an unknown number of mail ballots: given his refusal to authorize post office overtime, ballots received by the post office on election day may not get run through the machine that stamps the postmark until the next day. States are already extending the “postmarked by” date for their elections, in part to prevent this, and our representatives should support them.
Our Members of Congress need to speak out about the Republican assault on our elections, and they need to do even more. They need to stand up to the Republicans and take real action. We need our members calling every day to let them know we’re watching.
Become a poll worker
San Francisco needs you to become a poll worker. The pandemic makes working the polls dangerous for the retired and elderly people who usually make up the bulk of poll workers. If we want to make sure that the vote goes off without a hitch and that ballots are properly counted, we need people who are healthy and at low risk to take their place.
This commitment is for only one day, but it’s profoundly important to the democratic process. Find out more and sign up here!

We are Winning in Sacramento
August 31 marked the end of the 2020 legislative session in Sacramento, which meant that lawmakers in the California Senate and Assembly debated and voted on hundreds of bills for the chance to get them signed by the governor during this session. While we didn’t get everything we wanted out of this year’s session, we did have some significant wins:
- SB 739–A bill to criminalize misinformation about voting by mail–urgency clause attached to be in effect for the upcoming election.
- AB 3070–Addresses discrimination in jury selection.
- AB 2542 (Racial Justice Act) –Prohibits the state from seeking a conviction or imposing a sentence on the basis of race. Allows for a person convicted to seek a new trial upon proving proceedings that led to conviction were tainted by racial bias.
- AB 1185–Allows counties to establish Oversight Boards and an Inspector General to regulate the Sheriff’s Department.
- AB 2054 (the CRISES Act)–Establishes a pilot grant program to create community-based alternatives to armed police responses.
- AB 376–Establishes a Student Borrower Bill of Rights.
We’re not done yet. These bills survived the byzantine path of the California legislature and now face the final hurdle: the governor’s desk. We need YOU to call and email Governor Newsom and demand that he sign these bills into law.

As the election approaches, several organizations are running ongoing events daily or weekly until election day. Sign up for a shift on the dates below:
6 days a week: Virtual Phone Banks with Flip the West. Flip the West and Commit to Flip Blue jointly host a virtual phone bank focused on flipping U.S. Senate seats, six days a week, right up until November 3. Sign up for a shift here.
Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays: Spanish Language Phone Banks with Flip the West. If you are fluent in Spanish, you are needed to call Spanish-speaking voters about electing Democrats to the Senate and White House. Sign up for a shift here.
Wednesdays and Thursdays: Pennsylvania Stands Up/Seed the Vote Phone Bank training. PASU will train you to phone bank to help support general election work between now and November. Sign up for a shift here.
