Mozambique Initiative Representative Ezequiel M. Nhantumbo offers an update on how Mozambique is facing the coronavirus. Countrywide, cases are increasing, and the government is taking measures to stop the spread of COVID. Churches and Methodist institutions are struggling to meet government guidelines for reopening. Prayers and support are still needed in order to address the basic health needs of communities around the country.

September 19-20, 2020
Motorcycles play a critical role for the transportation of pastors in rural communities. Many pastors do not have access to transportation and have to walk miles to each of their churches. The MI Moto Rally hopes to raise awareness and funds to purchase motorbikes in country and supply them to pastors in need.
Bishop Farr will lead riders on two separate rides through Missouri on September 19-20, 2020, to help raise money for motorcycles in Mozambique. Stella Machel is starting a new adventure: The Master’s in Business Administration program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Though far from her home in Mozambique, Stella is no stranger to higher education. She completed a master’s program in finance at the University of London in 2013 and recently completed a Humphrey’s Fellowship at Boston University. MI has been privileged to walk with her along the way and share her story.

As needs have increased, faithful churches and donors have looked for ways to continue to walk together with our sisters and brothers in Mozambique. As of July 1, the Mozambique Initiative has received $487,094.03. However, as the pandemic continues, so do the needs.

It might only be September, but it’s not too early to start thinking about Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday gives us the chance to widen our lens and consider questions like: What is going on in regions of the world where healthcare is more fragile? What does it mean to be a global citizen in this moment? This year the Mozambique Initiative is focusing funds on extending the reach of mobile health clinics and supporting the local construction of hand-washing stations. We hope you’ll mark your calendars for December 1, Giving Tuesday, and consider making a special offering to MI.
