Silver State Equality, Nevada’s statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization and a strong and long-time PIF partner, frames immigration through an intersectional equity lens.


Their National Policy Director, Valerie Ploumpis, actively participates in PIF Federal Advocacy working group meetings on both the legislative and regulatory front. Valerie recently educated Members of Congress about the harm of the Trump public charge rule on Nevada’s immigrant families.


Citing research by the American Immigration Council, André Wade, Silver State Equality’s state director said, "About 19.2% of all Nevada residents belong to immigrant communities. LGBTQ+ people are members of this vibrant and diverse community, and Silver State Equality has advocated on behalf of Dreamers, refugee and asylum seekers, and for inclusive policies around family reunification and TPS extensions. We are proud to work in coalition at the federal level to fight back against the cruel, racist, and inhumane actions of both Trump administrations.”

Tracker Update: Two Lawsuits Challenge ACF’s Proposal to Share TANF Citizenship and Immigration Status with DHS

The Administration for Children and Families issued a System of Records Act Notice ([link removed]) (SORN) in June 2026, announcing that it planned to share TANF citizenship and immigration status data with DHS to verify whether TANF grantee agencies are complying with TANF program requirements, including verifying citizenship or immigration status. On August 3rd, two lawsuits were filed to challenge the proposal: one by 24 states and DC ([link removed]) , and the other by Make the Road States, Common Cause, and the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) ([link removed]) , represented by Democracy Forward and the National Center for Law and Economic Justice.

Tracker Update: CMS Issues “Implementation Tool” For Use When Implementing HR 1’s Immigrant Eligibility Restrictions

CMS’s “implementation tool ([link removed]) ,” issued on July 31, reminds states that they must complete eligibility redeterminations by October 1, 2026, which requires taking multiple steps before that to identify those who may become ineligible. States need to determine whether recipients have an immigration status that qualifies them for full Medicaid or CHIP; use information in the record and reverify status with SAVE; request additional information if unable to verify; evaluate if they are eligible under CHIPRA 214 or emergency Medicaid; and provide notice. Doing so requires states to update applications, eligibility determination logic systems, notices, appeals and the fair hearings process, and make any needed changes to their regular renewals process.
