How LGBTQI2S inclusive is your high school?

Let's start the school year off right by ensuring everyone is free to be their authentic self. Canadian secondary schools continue to face barriers when it comes to LGBTQI2S inclusion. We continue to see discrimination towards LGBTQI2S people, including students and educators, in secondary schools across Canada.

 64% of LGBTQI2S students
feel unsafe at school

Here are two immediate actions your school can take to improve the situation:

  1. Take Egale's Safer Schools LGBTQI2S inclusion workshops
  2. Take Egale's survey on LGBTQI2S inclusion in Canadian secondary schools

THE SURVEY:
Egale is currently undertaking the 2nd National Survey on LGBTQI2S Inclusion in Canadian Secondary Schools. However, according to the results of what continues to be the only current measure of LGBTQI2S inclusion in Canadian secondary schools, Egale's 2012 report, Every Class in Every School, shows that 64% of LGBTQI2S students feel unsafe at school and 58% of non-LGBTQI2S students are upset by homophobic comments.

THE WORKSHOPS:
In an effort to create more inclusive spaces for LGBTQI2S youth, Egale offers a variety of professional development workshops to secondary school teachers and students. Workshops include everything from Safer Schools 101 to Draw-The-Line Against Transphobic Violence

Egale's Safer Schools workshops provide participants with:

  • A deeper understanding of the impact homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and feeling unsafe have on student success and performance;
  • Concrete strategies for creating safer schools for all students and staff by addressing homophobia, biphobia and transphobia with confidence;
  • Free comprehensive resources to support inclusive classroom teaching and school-wide strategies;
  • Opportunities to network and share resources with other schools and teachers.

If you are interested in learning more about Egale's workshops or research, please email [email protected].

Sincerely,

Helen Kennedy
Executive Director, Egale Canada
