Dear
SPUC supporter,
Last week, I was away on holiday in South Wales. I mostly managed to switch off from work, but one thing that did break through was Andy Burnham’s comments on assisted suicide.

In case you missed it, the new PM told reporters: "I take the view that that debate - and I don't say that there shouldn't be a debate at some point about those issues - personally, I think there's something that needs to happen first.

"That is the fixing of the funding of palliative care and social care.

"I think it is very challenging to introduce that wider debate in a context of people not receiving that care and having the peace of mind about that care."

This is very encouraging. While Mr Burnham is not opposed on principle to assisted suicide, his comments are a marked shift from the position held by Sir Keir Starmer. The PM’s refusal to back the Bill at this time has the potential to sway a large number of wavering MPs.

But we cannot be complacent. We must do all we can to get MPs to vote the Bill down on September 11th. They need to know that not only does the Prime Minister not support this Bill, their constituents don’t either!

I know that many of you have already contacted or been to see your MP – thank you so much! Do keep sending the responses and reports back to us.

If you haven’t yet done so, there’s still time. We have just over a month now until MPs debate the Bill, and they are currently spending the summer in their constituencies. My colleague went to see his MP the other day and was amazed at how easy it was to set up!

All the resources you need to lobby your MP can be found here:
