Bishop William Barber II, founder of the Moral Monday movement and one of the
most prominent faith-based civil rights voices in the country, was arrested
alongside a group of faith leaders and activists inside the Hart Senate Office
Building after staging a demonstration demanding that Senate Majority Leader
John Thune meet with them to oppose what they characterized as voter
suppression in the SAVE America Act and the administration's broader voting

noncitizen voting. Critics, including the Campaign Legal Center, Barber's
coalition, and voting rights advocates, argue it would effectively eliminate
most current online and mail registration methods and create new barriers for
millions of eligible citizens who do not have immediate access to qualifying
documents. A comprehensive citizenship review of Utah's entire 2 million-voter
registration list found only 27 confirmed instances of noncitizen registration
and zero instances of noncitizen voting — evidence critics cite to argue the
law solves a near-nonexistent problem while disenfranchising real citizens.

into unrelated legislation." Trump has refused to sign bipartisan housing
legislation in an attempt to force the bill through Congress. The Senate, where
most legislation requires 60 votes to advance, remains the key obstacle.
Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who is retiring and opposes the bill,
told reporters there is no way to implement it before the November elections
even if it passes — a statement that reveals the political rather than
operational urgency behind the push.
