Happy Labor Day! I never got Labor Day, as a kid. It was just this strangely placed (on the calendar) holiday that put off the beginning of school by a day, which I was happy about. But today I see Labor Day as one of the more meaningful holidays in our great land, because we aren't celebrating historical moments that nobody remembers or mythical events, like my favorite holiday, Halloween. Today we celebrate the workers.

Eugene Debs, born in 1855, was a founding member of the Industrial Workers of the World. He was ahead of his time in his belief that all workers should unite in one union and treat each other as brothers and sisters, regardless of all other things. He also believed that it was wrong for one man to acquire hundreds of millions of dollars not working, or barely working, while millions of people work hard all day every day to barely get by.
We are fighting these same battles today. Several states have passed legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, but slowly over a period of several years. Other states still have a minimum wage under $8 an hour. Meanwhile CEOs of large corporations, like Kaiser Permanente, make over $15 million a year. To put that into perspective, at $15 an hour and working a 40 hour work week, you would have to work 25,000 weeks or 480 years just to earn what the CEO of Kaiser Permanente makes in 1 year, and that assumes that you save 100% of your earnings. This is what inequality looks like.
Look, I know you work hard and it's not easy to get by. There's really no such thing as "extra money", but if you can throw a few dollars our way, you're really investing in a movement that is working to transform our economic system so that it works for everybody. Make no mistake: I'm not promising that I can single-handedly change the economic system, or any other system all by myself. No one can do that. We need to all do it together, all of us. We need to elect progressives to Congress (both houses) and we need to keep the pressure on the elected officials who are on the fence. Fortunately, we're all lucky enough to be part of a pretty great movement. We can do this. But we gotta do it together. So please, hit that donate button, contribute a few bucks, and help collect signatures to get our campaign on the ballot, write letters to the editor about our campaign, tell your friends, host a house party. Just get involved, if you haven't already.
