Dear John,
Joanna, a mom in South Texas, was excited to tell her two children that they were going to have a baby sister. The kids were thrilled. She was too.
But then, during the pregnancy, she learned that her little baby was developing significant brain abnormalities. The doctors said her daughter probably would not be able to walk, talk, or eat.
The news was devastating.
After Katie was born, their pediatrician recommended going to their local Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) provider.
At first, Joanna says it all felt overwhelming. But she quickly learned how helpful ECI was.
The speech pathologist at Easter Seals Rio Grande Valley helped Katie learn to swallow. The therapists taught her to move her legs--and eventually she started walking. They even helped her learn to speak to her family.
Joanna says the biggest gift that ECI gave them was learning how to work as a family--and giving the kids a chance to be a big part of their sister's life.
Later, when her youngest daughter was born with similar challenges, Joanna knew to turn to ECI for help.
Today, Katie is thriving in school--a powerful reminder that the right support in a child's earliest years can shape everything that comes after.
Joanna's story is inspiring, but it shouldn't be extraordinary. Every family facing similar challenges deserves access to the support that helped Katie thrive.
And we work every day to make that happen.
Heading into last year's legislative session, we made the case to state leaders that ECI needed a funding boost to meet the growing number of kids in the program. We were thrilled that the Legislature came through with an $18 million increase in funding for ECI to support kids like Katie.
You can count on us to keep fighting to protect and strengthen Early Childhood Intervention, children's health care, nutrition assistance, and other proven programs that give children the best possible start in life--and prepare them for success in school.
As children across Texas head back to the classroom this fall, will you help ensure more families can access the support they need?
