The nursing profession is experiencing compounding demographic pressures as workers retire, the number of senior citizens increases and federal policies steer immigrants elsewhere, Alyssa Curtis of WWL Louisiana [link removed] reports. 

Louisiana could be among the states hardest hit, she reports. Vilma Palacios, who’d graduated from Louisiana State University, was working in New Orleans when immigration officials detained her. She now works in Canada, as Curtis reported separately [link removed]. 

Meanwhile, home care companies in upstate New York are facing worker shortages with the end of Temporary Protected Status and work authorization for Haitians and Syrians, reports Cat Carroll of the Times Union [link removed]. 

"Patients lose someone they’ve been talking to every single day," said Kevin Thomas, President and CEO of the New York State Association of Health Care Providers. "Somebody who knows how to make your tea, who knows your children’s names. And now someone new has to relearn it."

**EVANGELICAL DOUBTS** — Some evangelical Christians are beginning to question whether the administration’s immigration and other policies are in line with their values, Lucas Brown writes in an op-ed in The Orange County Register [link removed]. Brown homes in on cuts to refugee resettlement: "In claiming to defend Christianity, Trump has noted his support for persecuted Christians in places like Nigeria [link removed]. [So] why has he completely blocked persecuted Christian refugees from seeking shelter in the United States?"  

**DETAINEE DEATHS** — Edwin Jovanny Lopez Cornejo, 39, died Saturday at the Delaney Hall detention facility in New Jersey, Sophie Nieto-Munoz of the New Jersey Monitor [link removed] reports. His 12-year-old daughter, mother and aunt were not able to visit him in detention, Nieto-Munoz reports. In Georgia, Prisciliano Trejo Ricano, 29, died of leukemia after having been detained for weeks, Patricia Ortiz of Enlace Latino NC [link removed] reports. Ricano had said he did not receive timely medical attention despite having serious symptoms, Ortiz writes. 

**DREAM** — The 25-year (and counting) push for legislation to protect immigrants brought to the U.S. as children has left a legacy of hope and individual successes, Daniel C. Vock and Gregory Royal Pratt report in the Chicago Tribune [link removed]. They share the story of Tereza Lee, 43, who helped inspire the original Dream Act [link removed] via Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois). The vast majority of Americans still support such legislation, they report — as we’ve also found [link removed]. 

**THE BISHOP’S WORDS** — As Americans continue to mark our nation’s 250th, "we celebrate our democracy and our achievements as a nation, but at the same time we can never forget that it was because of immigration that we have achieved so much," Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio writes in America [link removed] magazine. "If we wish America to continue being great, we must deal with the problems that still afflict us. Immigration reform is necessary to preserve our moral place among nations."
