Dear Neighbor,

The safe removal of the nuclear waste at San Onofre has been one of my top priorities since I arrived in Congress. I've helped secure over $248 million to support that goal. Last week, the Department of Energy announced plans to use that funding to build Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses that could take the nuclear waste in our region. I won't stop fighting until the job is done.

The Department of Energy recently announced that five states have been selected to potentially host Nuclear Lifecycle Innovation Campuses, sites that will take and then dispose of nuclear waste, including from plants like San Onofre. Getting here took real bipartisan work, and it’s the result of the $248 million I secured to restart the federal government’s effort on collaborative solutions to safely remove and dispose of nuclear waste nationwide.

But let me be clear: the hard part isn’t behind us. It’s still ahead. The Administration and Congress must now work together to pass legislation that allows the government to move the waste to these sites and then fund the program fully so that we can solve our nuclear waste problem for good.

The Fertility Cost Relief Act Will
Help Families Afford IVF

For families struggling with infertility, the cost of IVF can be overwhelming. And if they turn to their own retirement savings for help, the government can hit them with a financial penalty. That simply makes no sense.

That’s why I recently introduced the bipartisan Fertility Cost Relief Act to allow individuals to withdraw up to $20,000 from their IRA or 401K for fertility treatment, including IVF, without an early-withdrawal tax penalty. Families should not be punished for using their own hard-earned savings to build a family.

Oversight of ICE Facilities Is Not Up for Debate

ICE’s new policy requiring 48 hours’ advance notice before Members of Congress can speak with detainees interferes with our duty to conduct unannounced congressional oversight of ICE facilities. It gives ICE time to prepare, clean things up, and control what we see.

I recently sent a letter to ICE’s Acting Director directly challenging the agency’s claims and demanding answers. Real oversight cannot happen on ICE’s terms. Click here for the KPBS article on this issue.

Families In Ladera Ranch Deserve Answers

My office has been monitoring the deeply alarming pattern of rare childhood cancer diagnoses in Ladera Ranch. Recently, I formally requested that the Environmental Protection Agency launch an immediate investigation into potential environmental factors contributing to these cases.

As Ladera Ranch’s representative, I will keep fighting for the answers, transparency, and safety guidance this community deserves.
