Behold the Trump Dollar: a President’s monument to himself, made to look like the gold he loves so dearly, yet small enough to fit in your pocket, a gumball machine, or a parking meter:
There’s a reason an 1866 law says we don’t put living presidents on our nation’s currency. It has to do with the president’s role as a servant to the people, not vice versa. It has to do with democratic principles of self-government, not a nation’s fealty to its King.
America's money belongs to us, the American people. It was never meant to be a branding opportunity to serve the political ambitions, the ego, or the self-promotion of whoever happens to occupy the White House. But Trump doesn’t care about all that.
He just wants his face on our dollar coin.
And Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is ready to give it to him. He claims there’s a loophole in a 2020 law for “circulating collectible coins” big enough to pass a presidential dollar through. It’s being minted now, though not scheduled to be released until the fall. Fortunately, a bill has been introduced that would shut down this coin -- as well Trump’s signature on the $100 bill.
Send a direct message to your senators urging them to cosponsor and pass the Change Corruption Act, close Treasury’s disputed loophole, and shut down this shameless abuse of public power.
The bottom line is, no president, living or sitting, of any party, gets to turn the Treasury into a billboard for himself. Our money is not a promotional tool or a symbol of personal power, paid for by taxpayers.
National symbols only work if they belong to everyone. The moment a president slaps his partisan face or name on the money in your pocket, that symbol stops being ours. It becomes nothing more than political merch for one man, one party, one regime.
Don't let Trump turn your $1 coin into a MAGA hat. Don't let your $100 bill become a campaign ad.
Our money belongs to the nation. Not to the politicians who serve it. Full stop.
