The Trump administration’s all out war on immigrants is reaching a fever pitch. Last week, hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian TPS holders were denied their protected status and work authorizations. This is all part of a larger effort to strip immigrant workers of their documentation and legal status, making an already precarious segment of the workforce even more vulnerable.

Haiti and Syria both still have strict Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisories from the United States State Department, meaning it is deemed too dangerous for citizens to travel due to unrest, violence and/or natural disasters there. Yet, this federal administration wants to send our Haitian and Syrian friends, neighbors, and coworkers back to these same countries deemed too unsafe and unstable for travel. 

In New York, tens of thousands of Haitians are healthcare workers, small business owners, construction workers, hotel and leisure workers, and professional workers—without whom, our local economies and healthcare systems could crumble, leaving thousands of sick and elderly New Yorkers at risk. Ending the Temporary Protected Status Program for Haitians and Syrians is cruel and clearly designed to further MAGA’s white nationalist goals while ensuring that the detention to deportation pipeline remains full.

Now, the administration has published a Federal Rule that will further restrict immigrants’ ability to adjust status, enter the United States on a visa, and receive public benefits. The updated ‘Public Charge’ rule restores broad discretion for US Customs and Immigrations Services officers to consider any means‑tested public benefits—such as Medicaid, SNAP, and housing assistance—when deciding green card applications. This new rule change is guaranteed to impact the health and well-being of thousands of low-income mixed status and immigrant families who are now being forced to choose between feeding their families and adjusting their legal status. This rule goes into effect on September 18, 2026.

By changing the rules and nullifying existing humanitarian policies, the Trump administration is closing avenues toward permanent legal status and forcing more immigrant families into detention and deportation proceedings. We need your help now more than ever.
