Summer is always a bit of a blur —road trips and campsites, sunshine and water, a happy but disruptive mix of hurry-up and wait. Of all the seasons, I feel like summer is the least likely we perceive as formative, precisely because it looks like nothing is being formed.

However, there’s the simple, profound idea I’ve been reminded of all summer: invisible formation precedes visible transformation.

See, we often mistake culminations for beginnings. But formation is almost never a beginning —it is always the continuation and convergence of what has come before. And the deepest formation often happens in hiddenness, long before anything visible appears.

The seed underground gives no sign of itself. The root goes on deepening in the dark while the branch, to all appearances, does nothing. Growth is happening —it is simply happening where we cannot yet see it.

This is how God tends to work in us. Quietly. Little by little, through and through. Beneath the surface. In the ordinary dog days of summer; in the blur of a season that asks nothing spectacular of us.

So if this summer has felt “un-formative” —too scattered to feel connected, too slow to feel like you’re going anywhere— consider that something is already taking shape. The transformation will come. It always does.

But first, the hidden, holy work in the hazy afterglow of another July day.

** Practicing Surrender
------------------------------------------------------------

Find something growing, ideally something that hasn't bloomed yet —a green tomato still on the vine, a bud closed tight against the heat, even a newly planted tree. Walk over and simply put your hand near the plant or gently on the leaves, and say, out loud or quietly to yourself: Invisible formation precedes visible transformation.

Then ask just one question: what's taking shape within me right now: uncelebrated, unseen, and unknown?

Maybe you'll hear about a conversation you keep having in your head, a grief you thought you'd finished with, or a truth about this season that you can feel but can't yet name. Try not to reply, not today. Write the question down and set a date to return to it sometime next month. This is the brave part: staying with the not-yet without forcing it into being or trying to force through control what can only happen through surrender.
