August 2, 1990

The Iraqi army invaded Kuwait amid claims that Kuwait threatened Iraq's economic existence by overproducing oil and driving prices down on the world market. An Iraqi military government was then installed in Kuwait which was annexed by Iraq on the claim that Kuwait was historically part of Iraq. This resulted in Desert Shield, the massive Allied military buildup, and later the 100-hour war against Iraq, Desert Storm.

Daniel Webster

Daniel Webster (1782–1852) – A brilliant orator and statesman, Daniel Webster fiercely defended the Constitution and the Union during a time of rising sectionalism. He served as a Congressman, Senator, and Secretary of State under three presidents. His speeches in favor of national unity and against nullification are among the greatest in American history. Webster supported American industry and commerce and helped guide the country through political turbulence in the early 19th century. Though he failed in his presidential bids, his intellectual influence endured. His vision of a united, prosperous America helped pave the way for future compromises.

One of the most powerful moments in Daniel Webster’s life came during his famous “Second Reply to Hayne” speech in the U.S. Senate on January 26, 1830. In response to Senator Robert Hayne’s defense of states’ rights and nullification, Webster delivered a thunderous defense of national unity and the Constitution. Over two days, he captivated the chamber with his soaring rhetoric, culminating in the immortal line: “Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable!” His words helped define the meaning of American nationalism at a time when the country was teetering on sectional divide. The speech was so moving that even political opponents praised it, and schoolchildren across generations memorized it as a patriotic touchstone.
