Thank you to everyone who joined us for our second OLCV Book Club meeting! We had a great discussion about Saving Big Creek. I loved this book, and really enjoyed the way Andrea brought this piece of Oregon’s history to life. Thank you again to Andrea for joining us to answer questions, and for donating part of the book sales to OLCV!
Now, with fall quickly approaching, it’s time to choose our next book. This time around we’re cycling back to environmentally-themed fiction. I have a few ideas (all with climate change themes!), but I want to know what you want to read! Cast your vote in the poll here: [link removed]
Which book should we read for our next OLCV Book Club meeting?
The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi (2015) - Science Fiction
The Water Knife takes place in a drought-stricken American Southwest where water is as precious as gold. The story focuses on Angel, a man whose job is to “cut” water, and who gets wrapped up in a plan to monopolize one of the last water sources in the desert.
Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver (2012) - Literary Fiction
Flight Behavior tells the story of a woman named Dellarobia, who discovers a rare and awe-inspiring migration of butterflies in her yard that leads to an awakening about climate change for her and her entire Appalachian community.
Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler (2000) - Science Fiction
Set in the future, Parable of the Sower focuses on the journey of a hyper-empathetic woman named Lauren, who, when her parents are killed, must leave her peaceful compound to start a new life, passing through a dangerous world plagued by war, disease, and water shortages to find safety in the north.
