Hi there,
The Michigan primary election is just two days away, and in the 7th
Congressional District, there’s a heavily contested Democratic primary to
determine who will be taking on Republican incumbent Representative Tom
Barrett this November.
As a reminder, Swing Left doesn’t get involved in primaries. We’re ready
to support whoever Democratic voters in Michigan’s 7th Congressional
District choose as their nominee this fall.
However, there’s one big problem: In contested primaries, candidates often
spend all of their available funds to try and win the nomination.
That means whichever Democratic candidate emerges on Tuesday will likely
be starting the general election with $0 in their campaign account.
Meanwhile, Tom Barrett reported having $3 million cash on hand coming into
this month—meaning he’ll be ready to start running attack ads against his
general election opponent as soon as the Democratic primary is over.
The race in this district is going to be one of the most competitive in
the country this November—independent political analysts Cook Political
Report, Sabato’s Crystal Ball, and Inside Elections list this race as a
Toss-Up. It’s critical that we make sure the Democratic nominee has the
early funds needed to respond to Republican attacks and start building a
winning general election campaign the moment they emerge from the primary.
