On July 24, 2026, a federal district court in Virginia ruled that the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) restrictions on the
abortion pill mifepristone are “ baseless [[link removed]] ” and “ unjustified [[link removed]] ” because the agency disregarded extensive scientific evidence. Research has demonstrated that the medication can be safely prescribed without burdensome regulations. Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said the FDA’s restrictions “ were never about science or safety [[link removed]] ,” but rather “ about making abortion harder to access [[link removed]] .”
The court ordered the FDA to reconsider its restrictions, noting that the agency has repeatedly concluded that mifepristone is “ safe and effective [[link removed]] .” The ruling aligns with decades of scientific research confirming the medication’s safety. When used as directed, mifepristone has a 95–99% effectiveness rate [[link removed]] and is widely regarded as one of the most accessible, flexible, and cost-effective methods of abortion care. In its latest effort to reshape federal election policy, the Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to allow enforcement of an executive order that would impose new restrictions on mail-in voting while legal challenges proceed.
On June 29, 2026, the Justice Department filed an emergency appeal asking the Court
to pause lower court rulings that blocked key provisions of Executive Order 14399: [[link removed]] Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections [[link removed]] .
The executive order would require mail-in ballots to be sent only to individuals included on a federal "state citizenship list" compiled by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Social Security Administration. It would also prohibit states from sending ballots with individualized barcodes to voters who are not included on those lists.
