Hard work, and the pride that goes with it, run to the core of Wisconsin's heritage.
We're called the Badger State not because of the four-legged mammals, but because of the intrepid workers who moved to Wisconsin to mine. After a long day of work, they would sleep in abandoned mineshafts and makeshift burrows.
These ancestors of ours found reward and value in their tireless work, and they built the foundation of this great state I'm proud to represent in the U.S. Senate. And it's not just work that's part of our heritage, but workers' rights as well.
Wisconsin is the birthplace of the Labor Movement. Here, we fought and bled for fair treatment, equality, and the recognition of the dignity of hard work.
I don't say this lightly: without Wisconsin's workers, I don't think there would even be a Labor Day.
But it's not enough to rest on our laurels — more than ever before, workers' rights are under attack. Republicans across the country have teamed up to strip hard-working women and men of the protections they once knew.
Attack after attack from right-wing politicians and corporate interests looking to pad their own pockets have made it harder for working people to get ahead. And this isn't just about Wisconsin; this is a national assault on the Labor Movement. It must be stopped.
I know it's a day off for many of you, but this is too important not to bring it up. There's so much work ahead of us.
I'm fighting back and pushing to move us forward. From guaranteeing pensions to introducing apprenticeship programs — I'm doing my best for America's working people. But it's going to take all of us speaking out, stepping up, and when push comes to shove, voting.
I’m committed to standing up for workers and fighting to make our economy stronger. This Labor Day, I hope you’ll remember the contributions of American workers and support policies that expand their rights. I know I will.
After all, Wisconsin is where the Labor Movement was born — and I'm sure as heck going to make sure that's not where it dies.
In solidarity,
— Tammy
