Photographer and cinematographer Paul Nicklen has dedicated his life to documenting our planet’s incredible beauty—from rare bear species in British Columbia to color-changing squid in Indonesia. His new book, Reverence, is a celebration of his raw love of nature and his hope to inspire people to stop “thrashing this planet.” National Geographic got a peek at the collection of the awe-inspiring wildlife photos.

The dancing northern lights, glow of the Milky Way, and motion of the stars were once the domain of only professional photographers, snapping the otherworldly moments with thousands of dollars of camera equipment.  

But today, anyone can capture the cosmos with smartphones—and proper guidance. Photographer Sadeq Hayati has taken more than 50,000 images of the dark sky with his Samsung phone, and he is spilling his secrets on how anyone can photograph the stars.
