John,
You know by now that on Saturday, as Americans across the country were celebrating the holiday weekend, terror struck West Texas when a shooter killed seven and wounded at least 21 others in a drive-by mass shooting.
Our hearts are with Odessa and Midland, two towns forced to join the ranks of far too many other cities known for the horrors that have affected them.
This tragedy came the day after at least 10 young people were shot at a high school football game in Mobile, Alabama. So August ended as it began, with back to back tragedies. The month started with the horror of Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas and ended with Mobile and Odessa.
In total, at least 53 people were killed in mass shootings last month. Fifty-three lives stolen, 53 families grieving, 53 communities shattered.
We cannot continue this way. Every day that our elected officials refuse to act, more lives are senselessly lost.
We know what it takes to prevent gun violence. We have led the way in Washington state passing commonsense policies that help keep guns out of dangerous hands. But being safe from gun violence shouldn’t depend on where you live. It is time for Congress to take real action to end this epidemic. We won’t stop fighting until they do.
Thank you for sharing in our grief and, more importantly, our resolve.
Renée
