Today, as we enjoy the day with our families, breathing a sigh of relief that we're not taking the brunt of Dorian, we are also thankful for the hard-working Americans who've built this country.

Generations of American workers before us, their unions, and allies fought back against the excesses of oil barons, aristocrats, and Wall Street. They carved out fair pay, the weekend, overtime protections, child labor laws, safety rules and helped align our cause as ALL Americans with that of other civil rights movements in our history.

Today, I'm thankful for unions and the labor movement, but I'm also steadfastly aware that our fight is not behind us. With automation, inequality, and excess all around, it's time for a new generation to stand up and make our mark to improve the lives of future Americans.

Paid family leave, healthcare, and fair pay are right around the corner; if we're willing to follow in our forefather's footsteps and fight for them
