I know it’s a holiday weekend, but I wanted to make sure you saw this. Hurricane Dorian has stalled in the Atlantic and continues to pound the Bahamas with destructive winds and rain. The full extent of the disaster is still unknown, but the initial news photos we’ve seen are sobering and damages look catastrophic.

I just spoke with Jill Morehead, leader of our initial response team, who told me,

"As we get ready to deploy, we are watching nervously as Hurricane Dorian slowly inches over the Bahamian islands. News reports tell us that some low-lying islands may be completely submerged. We need to get to Nassau and meet with the local emergency managers and get a better sense of the destruction. For now, we are taking boxes of solar lanterns given the island-wide power blackout in Grand Bahama."

As families and communities in the Bahamas ride out this devastating hurricane and assess the damage, please make a gift to our Humanitarian Response Fund today. Your vital support helps us to respond in moments of crisis around the world, to hurricanes and other natural disasters, and to be there with people overcoming poverty and oppression.

Thank you for your support today.

Hurricane Dorian
Mercy Corps mobilizing to help survivors ▸

After passing Puerto Rico earlier this week, Hurricane Dorian slammed into the Bahamas today as a catastrophic Category 5 storm. Families there are enduring wind gusts over 220 mph and storm surge up to 18-23 feet above normal tide levels.

Mercy Corps is mobilizing a team of emergency responders — which includes members from our Puerto Rico team — to the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian’s landfall as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes on record.

Our team will begin rapidly determining the most pressing needs. We will focus on the most vulnerable households and people in the greatest need of aid. From our experience in these moments, we know the most pressing needs are likely to include clean water, sanitation and temporary food and shelter resources.

Please make an emergency gift to our Humanitarian Response Fund. When disasters like this strike, you can be there with us to help meet survivors with compassion. Your gift today helps people and families around the world survive in moments of crisis and natural disaster, overcome poverty, and build brighter futures for their communities.
