Conducting Alcohol Environmental Scans
Has the alcohol access changed due to COVID-19? Have grocery and convenience stores moved alcohol to a more prominent location within their store? Have they increased the number of aisles and displays containing alcohol? Conducting an Alcohol Environmental Scan can help answer those questions.
The goal of environmental scanning is to identify your community’s risk factors that can contribute to underage or excessive alcohol consumption. Conducting a scan allows you to observe and document the 4 P’s: Price, Product, Promotion, and Place. Documenting these observations and pairing that information with other assessment data, such as youth survey data, allows you to create a clear picture of alcohol in your community. Share your youth survey data with store managers – many are not aware of use rates nor the potential risk for easy access.
Finally, if you would like Technical Assistance, the APRC is here for you. We can provide assistance on how to conduct an Alcohol Environmental Scan as well as how to package your data to share with retail merchants.
