This weekend, President Donald Trump echoed his false claims that he could seek another term as president at the White House Correspondents Dinner, saying, “I won three times, now I’m going to do it again.”

While some may claim the president is joking, we’re not laughing. Because the 22nd Amendment lays it out very clearly:

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

Trump and his allies have tried to muddy the waters, but the Constitution is crystal clear.

The 22nd Amendment [[link removed]] ended a 150-year debate over presidential term limits. It states very clearly: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice."

The amendment was voted out of Congress by a supermajority in both chambers. 41 state legislatures ratified it and it officially went into effect after 36 of the then 48 states ratified the amendment in February 1951.

Support for ratification was overwhelming across the state legislatures that ratified the amendment. The ratifying states represent every region of the country and the amendment was often ratified with bipartisan support.

Despite the long-standing history of the 22nd Amendment, Trump seems to think it doesn’t apply to him. He’d rather treat the Constitution and presidential term limits as negotiable.

This is exactly why the 22nd Amendment exists, John. No matter what Trump may say or joke, the Constitution is not up for debate. Term limits are not optional. Presidents are not kings.
