Dear friend,
Tomorrow, thousands will gather in Chicago for The Fierce Urgency of Now: A National March into Marquette Park, a historic multi-faith mobilization for voting rights, freedom from mass criminalization, economic justice, and a future rooted in dignity for all.
We invite you to join us on Saturday, August 1st in Chicago. From 9am-2pm We will gather and march toward Marquette Park, and continue with post-march activations from 2:00 - 5:00 PM. Bring your family, your congregation, your organization, and your community. You won’t want to miss this moment of moral public witness and movement-building.
The Fierce Urgency of Now speaks to today as a Kairos moment. We are living through a time where our civil and human rights are being eroded and need to protected, prioritized, and ensured. This week, we’ll be in the Midwest from Chicago to Kansas City rallying communities around their survival, the protection of their neighbors, and ensuring this beloved community.

Throughout the summer, the Kairos Center has been joining with community and faith partners across five regions to launch a Season of Survival Revivals. These gatherings will bring together neighbors, organizers, artists, faith leaders, and movement partners to: meet immediate material needs through mutual aid and community support; create spaces for grounding, healing, culture, and spiritual connection; and build collective power and take action for cultural and economic transformation.
Kansas City, KC August 2nd
Across the state and the country, people are struggling to afford the basics of life due to rising costs, deepening inequality, and disinvestment in our communities. At the same time, attacks on democracy, rising fascism, and religious nationalism are intensifying political and spiritual crises that touch every part of our lives.
However, this is not the whole story. In communities everywhere, people are organizing to care for one another, meet urgent needs, and fight for a future rooted in dignity, justice, and shared abundance.

Black August with Freedom Church of the Poor
Black August has always been a sacred time of remembrance, resistance, political education, and preparation for struggle. Born inside California prisons in the 1970s after the assassinations of George Jackson, Jonathan Jackson, and the deaths of other incarcerated freedom fighters, Black August calls us to honor those targeted by systems of state violence while recommitting ourselves to the unfinished work of liberation.
As Freedom Church of the Poor gathers for Black August 2026, we recognize that the struggles for immigrant rights, voting rights, economic justice, and the abolition of mass incarceration are deeply interconnected. The criminalization of Black people, immigrants, poor people, unhoused communities, and all dispossessed people flows from the same systems of exploitation and control that seek to divide us by race, nationality, citizenship status, language, and geography. From prisons and detention centers to police violence, voter suppression, attacks on public education, union organizing, and the right to dissent, we are witnessing an intensified assault on democracy and human dignity.
