Friend,
This Labor Day, think
internationally!
The DSA-LA Political Education
Committee is proud to present ‘Imperialism: A Study
Series.’ RSVP for it today!
This four-part series kicks off on
September 19th; new and long-time comrades and interested
community members are invited to attend this series designed to
examine the relationship between imperialism and capitalism, and
ongoing debates therein. Political education is not only an entry
point to united class struggle, but a site to return to again and
again for guidance in our anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist
organizing—download the course reader and RSVP for the series today!
And before the series kicks
off, join us for a phonebank to invite comrades
to the event, and a special talk with Max Elbaum, organizer and author of Revolution in the Air: Sixties radicals turn to Lenin, Mao, and
Che. On September 14 at 1pm, we’ll share discussion inspired by this
retrospective analysis on the New Communist Movement—one
that promises valuable insights from this leftist tendency and can be
applied towards our anti-imperialist work in DSA today.
DSA-LA FOR BERNIE 2020
Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 3rd
marks 6 months out from Super Tuesday (March 3,
2020), the massively
influential presidential primary date, which will include California
and many other states, and which could likely decide the winner of the
race. (Bernie.)
Our organizing work supporting
Bernie is just heating up, not just in LA and California but across
the country. Next weekend, September 7th, 8th, and
9th, DSA chapters across the
U.S. are going all out on Bernie kickoff events. Stay tuned for more
information on DSA-LA events that you can plug into this
week!
If you’d like to get involved with our
Bernie work, sign up here!
We’ll also be hosting
Debate Watch Viewing Parties and
fundraisers for the next set
of Democratic debates that Bernie is in: Thursday,
September 12. RSVP for debate
watch parties for our Central, Valley, and Westside branches today.
THIS WEDNESDAY: ALL OUT AT CITY HALL AGAINST LAMC
41.18
LA City Councilmember Mitch
O’Farrell is working with City Attorney and Mayoral aspirant Mike
Feuer to jam a terrifying revised law through City Council called LAMC
41.18d. The law would make it illegal to sit, lay,
or sleep inside or within 500 feet of a park, school, homeless
shelter, and on. There are even provisions in the law that make it
illegal to speak or behave in a way that might be perceived as
threatening. The point of
the law is to make public space virtually inaccessible to the unhoused
and lay the groundwork for their disappearance. The original version
of the law was found to be unconstitutional and thus largely
unenforceable - making this an attempt to work around that
ruling.
As rents expand ever higher in LA,
and the poor and unhoused are increasingly dispossessed and
criminalized, is there anything left to us but to organize and
fight?
Join our Housing & Homelessness Committee this
Wednesday, 2:00 p.m. at City Hall to speak out against this law, which
amounts to apartheid. RSVP
UPCOMING CHAPTER MEETINGS IN SEPTEMBER
Our next chapter-wide branch
meetings are set for Saturday, September 14th
3:30 - 5:30 p.m. This
is our first assembly as a chapter since the national convention in
Atlanta, so we’ll take some time to learn about the national
priorities that were decided on with our chapter’s delegates, and
discuss how to implement them together.
Join us and learn more about how we
can build a stronger socialist movement in Los Angeles! RSVP for the
Central, Valley, and Westside branch meetings today.
And if you’re new to DSA-LA and
would like to meet a few new comrades plus learn how to plug into our
work, sign up for a New Member Meet & Greet, for the half hour
before the branch meetings start (3:00 p.m.). RSVP for the Central, Valley, and Westside Meet & Greet.
And if you’re the guardian of a
little one, RSVP for Child Watch if you’d like to engage in the meeting more
independently. We have volunteers, toys and activities, and a whole
little setup at each of our branch meetings so the child that you’re
caring for will have companionship, activities, and supervision while
you’re perhaps more free to participate in the meeting. And
alternatively: kids are more than welcome to join their guardians in
our meetings. Have them sit with you if it’s best, DSA is kid
friendly!
And if you’d like to get involved
in our Child Watch project, or you’re a returning volunteer and want
to volunteer at any of the branch meetings above, click here!
SAVE THE DATE: LOCAL CONVENTION, OCTOBER 19th
Speaking of conventions! Our own
local convention representing DSA across Los Angeles County will take
place on Saturday, October 19th at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in
Koreatown. Be sure to mark your calendars so you can join hundreds of
socialist Angelenos as we deliberate on our chapter’s priorities for
the upcoming year. For more information check out our convention
webpage, and stay tuned for more information on proposed resolutions,
trainings on Robert’s Rules, and other parliamentary fun.
It’ll also be essential that 20 percent of our membership
join us at convention so that we meet quorum! So if you are brand new to DSA-LA, or you
have been in the org since before socialism was hip again, RSVP for Convention!
If you have been waiting to pay
National Dues so that you can join DSA, join today at this link and
then: RSVP for Convention!
And if our national dues are too
steep for you right now, we understand, so we have created our special
Comrades for Comrades program, which sponsors new comrades’ dues.
Check out the C4C program, and then, we implore you,
RSVP
for Convention!
