Egale CanadaACCEC, and INNOVATIVE have partnered to release a Second National Report on the Impacts of COVID-19 on LGBTQI2S People in Canada. Released last week, the report is a follow-up to an initial national study released in April 2020 that uncovered alarmingly disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 for LGBTQI2S people in areas including household financesjob lossmental & physical health, and overall quality of life.

Like the first report, the second reveals that despite improvements for all Canadians, LGBTQI2S people continue to be disproportionately impacted during COVID-19. Most significantly, this study found that Black and racialized LGBTQI2S people are the MOST impacted during these unprecedented times.

Key statistical highlights include:

MORE members of the BIPOC LGBTQI2S community live with health conditions, physical disabilities and mental disabilities compared to both the LGBTQI2S community at large and the national population

BIPOC LGBTQI2S respondents were over two times more likely to know someone who has been admitted to the hospital for a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19 (21% compared to 9%)

BIPOC LGBTQI2S respondents were two times more likely to report a significant negative impact on their mental health (47% compared to 26%)

At Egale, our mission is to improve the lives of LGBTQI2S people in Canada by informing public policy, inspiring cultural change, and promoting human rights and inclusion through research, education, awareness, and legal advocacy. We believe that in order to create change, we must work collectively to ensure that no one is left behind. Click here to read the full report.

In Case You Missed It:

 Inclusive and Affirming Language Resource

Pronouns and names are not the only parts of language marked by gender. Our everyday language is often gendered. By shifting this language to be more inclusive, we can respect and acknowledge the gender identities of all people. Always be mindful of your assumptions and consider gender-neutral ways of communicating the same phrases. These tips are especially important in instances where you are referring to a general audience or don’t know the gender of the people you are speaking to.
