Dear John,

I've been busy both in Parliament and out and about in Selwyn. I've been across the district delivering leaflets and knocking on doors alongside the wonderful Selwyn National Party volunteers!

With the election only 99 days away and more exciting policy announcements to come, I will continue to keep you updated on the highlights for Selwyn and what I get up to.

POLICY

PAID PARENTAL LEAVE

One of the greatest privileges in life is welcoming a baby into your world. Those first weeks and months are precious, but they can also be overwhelming.

I am so proud to have stood alongside Christopher Luxon and Nicola Willis MP to announce that the National Party is committing to gradually extend paid parental leave from 26 weeks to 30 weeks by 2029, giving parents more time with their newest family member.

We're also making paid parental leave more flexible by allowing parents to take some or all of their leave at the same time. Every family is different, and parents should be able to choose what works best for them.

As well as that, we’ll continue government KiwiSaver contributions to mums, even if they can’t make their own.

We recognise the realities of modern family life and want to give parents more choice during one of life's biggest milestones.

CONSENT LAWS

National will modernise sexual consent laws to specify there must always be a ‘yes’, rather than an absence of a ‘no’.

The change would align the law with what we've been telling our kids for a long time: that you need positive consent before sex, each and every time, rather than presuming it.

We’re focused on fixing the basics in law and order, and modernising our consent laws is an important part of that.

OUT AND ABOUT

MINISTER BREWER VISIT

This month we were privileged to have Minister Cameron Brewer in Selwyn, here are some of the highlights from his visit!

I visited PAK’nSAVE Rolleston with the Minister with his Commerce and Consumer Affairs portfolio. It’s the biggest PAK'nSAVE in the South Island and it was exciting to see local products represented on the shelves.

I also took the Minister with his Manufacturing portfolio to Global Beacon Ventures to see their manufacturing plant in the IZone where they make buses and trucks that run off of hydrogen and electrical systems.

ELLESMERE COLLEGE MIHI WHAKATAU

How exciting to see Ellesmere College’s new buildings open recently!

As a part of our government’s $55 million investment in the school’s redevelopment, today saw the delivery of: 3 new learning hubs, an auditorium, and a creativity and innovation hub.

Principal Antony French gave me a tour of the completed rooms and I’m thrilled to see how this will significantly improve learning environments for students.

LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL

I met with some future leaders of our district at Lincoln High School earlier this week.

As a part of the year 13 social studies Social Impact assessment, they often write to me as their local MP about some of their ideas. It was great to meet them in person and explain my roles and how our democracy works.

A huge thank you to the students for such insightful discussion and thought-provoking questions!
