This week a special debate was held in Parliament, and I had the opportunity to speak in support of the residents of Wright Road near Katikati who are still trying to restore right-turning access to their properties.
The debate was based on a petition submitted by Rochelle Zajko, a local who has spent considerable time and energy to rally her community to lobby NZTA to make sensible changes to the median barriers which have been installed on SH2 between Katikati and Omokoroa.
These barriers are a holdover from the previous government’s plan to install fences along this stretch of highway. The community has been strongly opposed to this work from the get go, and we have managed to stop the installation of a lot of these barriers but the one affecting about 1,000 Wright Road residents remains in place.
NZTA have stubbornly refused to budge on this issue. This is despite accidents in the area increasing, reports of motorists attempting risky U-turns, and the lives of residents being negatively affected by increased travel times, which means they are spending more time and money just to go about their daily business.
I have called on the Board of NZTA to make this right by taking down their fence at Wright Road and restoring right-turn access to the residents who live there.

HAURAKI/COROMANDEL ORDER OF ST JOHN AWARDS
A few weeks ago I attended an awards ceremony to acknowledge the hard-working team at the Hauraki/Coromandel Order of St John.
I was thrilled to recognise the tremendous work these professionals and volunteers do for our region, both as the Local Member of Parliament and as a member of the community. And what really stood out was the amount of time that some members had given to this essential organisation.
Huge congratulations to all those who received awards, especially Bruce MacDonald who notched up 50 years of service with St John. That’s a lifetime of service and I hope your example inspires others to think about how they can give back to our communities.
LOCALS GETTING INVOLVED WITH GREY POWER NEW ZEALAND
Grey Power is a nationwide organisation which represents older New Zealanders, and it’s
no secret that a lot of seniors call the Coromandel electorate their home.
As it happens, both the President of Grey Power New Zealand David Marshall and its Secretary Margaret Sole are locals in our electorate. It was great to catch up with David and Margaret when they visited Parliament to discuss local and nationwide issues.
MOVING TO MONTHLY REPORTING FOR INFLATION
As the Minister of Statistics, I was pleased to announce that New Zealanders will have access to monthly inflation data from July 2027 as part of a major upgrade to the country’s economic statistics.
This is about giving families, businesses and government more frequent inflation data, which will allow them to make better-informed decisions.
The transition to monthly Consumer Price Index reporting will be phased in to ensure quality remains at the highest standard. And when this transition is complete, it will represent one of the biggest improvements to New Zealand’s economic statistics in decades, and one that will have widespread benefits.
This is about fixing the basics and building a more modern and responsive economic statistics system for New Zealand.
