​​Toxic pollution impacts communities in every corner of the state. In Yakima County, for example, six schools are sitting on top of soil contaminated with pesticides from former orchard operations that should have been cleaned up years ago​.​ ​​​

Together with our partners in Yakima County, Washington Conservation Action is saying “time’s up” on toxics. We're helping to organize the community on the ground to demand long-overdue cleanup of poisoned soil threatening the health of kids.

​WCA helped pass the original MTCA bill in 1988 – but we didn’t stop there.

For decades, we’ve worked closely with local partners grappling with legacy contamination and ongoing sources of pollution. In Yakima County, we work with partners like ELLA​, Empowering Latina Leadership and Action, a Chicana/Latina-led social justice ​organization​ based out of Sunnyside,​ to educate the community and help people demand action from their elected leaders and state agencies.

Right now, that looks like creating and sharing resources for community members to learn how to decrease contact with toxics like lead and arsenic and working closely with the Department of Ecology to follow through on clean up.

Real change happens when we consistently show up – in Olympia, to advocate for stronger environmental policies and delivering funding on the ground for essential programs like MTCA, and in communities across Washington to help make sure that those policies turn into real outcomes.
