The implications of this race are major. A Democratic governor in Ohio wouldn't just serve as a critical check on an extreme, anti-democracy legislature, but would also fill a key seat on the state's redistricting commission. This political commission has enabled Republican gerrymandering. Gerrymandering has helped maintain Republican control of the state assembly for most of the last 32 years. But all that could swing if control of this commission changes, which could happen with wins in the governor, auditor, and secretary of state races — making it possible to draw fairer maps in the future. 

It’s no wonder why national Republicans have announced plans to blow the state’s spending records out of the water. They know what’s at stake.
