Every quarter, the world’s biggest money managers are forced to show you their
hands. Any institution running over $100 million must disclose its U.S. stock
positions in a filing called a 13F — and decades of academic research on
“cloning” those disclosed picks has found that simply riding along with top
managers’ best ideas would have beaten the market handily over time. These
managers aren’t smarter than you. They just have better research, more time,
and deeper resources. When several of them converge on the same stock, that’s
worth your attention. But — and this is the part the copycat newsletters never
tell you — 13Fs come with three built-in catches, and today’s three stocks
happen to demonstrate all three. First: the filings are old news — they show
positions as of quarter-end, filed up to 45 days later, so a “recent buy” may
be four months stale, or already sold. Second: holding is not buying — a
position on a filing tells you nothing about when it was built or at what
