Hi John,

A teen uncovering a family secret that changes everything. A pop star trapped in a fake relationship. A soulmate algorithm that gets it wrong.

These are the kinds of stories at the heart of this year’s It Gets Better Summer Reading Challenge [[link removed]]. They are the kind of stories I wish I could have read growing up: exciting, engaging, and emotional reads that don’t center being LGBTQ+ as something to hide.

We’re spotlighting six LGBTQ+ authors [[link removed]] whose characters get to be more than cautionary tales or tragic coming-out stories. They are sleuths, stars, lovers, rivals, and complicated people swept up in mysteries, romances, thrillers, ambition, family secrets, and messy choices.

And these six books are only the beginning.

Our friends at Queer Liberation Library are helping readers go even further. Think of it as a free digital library card for queer literature: sign up for an account, connect through the Libby app, and start exploring a growing collection of LGBTQ+ books from wherever you are.

They’ve also shared some of their favorite summer reads, from The Summer Love Strategy and She Is a Haunting to Time and Time Again, Homebody, and Trans History. Whether you’re looking for a modern classic, an asexual love story, Black queer history, or an alternate-history fantasy with dragons, your next book is waiting.

Explore our [[link removed]] Summer Reading Challenge [[link removed]] , [[link removed]] discover Queer Liberation Library, and share both with someone who needs a new story. You can also support our storytelling efforts by donating to It Gets Better [[link removed]], sharing our fundraiser, or launching one of your own [[link removed]]. Help us put more LGBTQ+ stories in front of young people who deserve to see themselves on the page.
