PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

We have lots of ways to connect this week through our pillars of Support, Education, and Advocacy; check them out below!

Gavin Grimm on supporting our trans loved ones

Check out this excerpt from a great essay by Gavin Grimm on how people can support their trans loved ones. The full essay is included in the book BODY TALK: 37 Voices Explore Our Radical Anatomy by Kelly Jensen, an anthology featuring essays, lists, comics, and illustrations from artists, writers, advocates, and more about how their particular, unique bodies have helped to inform who they are.

Gavin says, "It is readily obvious that affirming trans people and creating a world where we can live freely and authentically leads to better outcomes for our mental and physical well-being. It doesn’t require a study, although there have been some. All people want to be respected, seen and heard for who they are." Read the full excerpt now.

Three steps to being a better voter registration advocate

Just because you’re staying in doesn’t mean your voter registration efforts should stop! So, stay safe and take these steps to engage:

  1. Learn: Learn more about National Voter Registration Day--coming up on September 22nd--and how to participate.
  2. Watch: Check out the June PFLAG Academy On-Demand session PFLAG Votes 2020: Our Right and Our Responsibility. Don't have much time? Then check out this PFLAG Votes 2020: Advocacy in 10 Minutes or Less video on voter registration drives.
  3. Share: Use emails, texts, or social media (like Facebook or Twitter) to share a voter registration check link--like this one from vote.org--with your friends and family. Try a message like “Are you registered to vote? Are you sure? Confirm your voter registration today!" And be sure to include the #PFLAGVotes2020 hashtag!

Sign up to be a Nonpartisan Election Protection volunteer

Nonpartisan Election Protection volunteers will be voters’ first line of defense against restrictive election laws, coronavirus-related voting disruptions, or anything else that could silence their voices.

There are many ways to get involved — whether that’s monitoring polling places (from your vehicle, or with proper personal safety equipment), watchdogging social media for disinformation, or reaching out to voters to make sure they know their rights. You can also help connect voters with trained legal professionals who can help them navigate the voting process and cast their ballots safely and securely.

Make a major difference for voters in your community by signing up today!
