Hi John,
Amazing news: Today, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington dismissed a gun lobby-backed lawsuit challenging voter-approved Initiative 1639!
The lawsuit challenged two provisions included in the initiative: raising the purchase age for semi-automatic assault rifles to 21 and prohibiting the sale of semi-automatic assault rifles to non-residents who are not subject to an enhanced background check process.
The gun lobby lost in the court of public opinion in 2018 and brought this lawsuit as a last-ditch attempt to block the lifesaving measure from taking effect. Although we expect the gun lobby to appeal, they were dealt a significant blow today. This is a huge milestone in the fight for gun safety in Washington.
Initiative 1639 is the most comprehensive gun safety measure in state history. Dedicated gun responsibility advocates like you got this groundbreaking measure passed and supported our legal battle for the last two years.
Join us today in taking a moment to celebrate the progress we’ve made.
Onward,
