Dear John,
On July 10, the NhRP took a crucial next step in our lawsuit on behalf of Angeline, Savanna, Tasha, Victoria, and Zuri—the five female African elephants held captive by the Pittsburgh Zoo. The NhRP filed an appeal with the Superior Court asking them to reverse the lower court’s dismissal of the case and allow it to be heard. However, while the legal process moves forward, our clients' lives continue to change in ways they cannot control.
Just a few weeks ago, the Pittsburgh Zoo announced that they transferred Angeline and Savanna to their off-site breeding facility—the same breeding facility they sent Victoria and Zuri to last year—separating the elephants from each other and from Tasha, who remains at the zoo, after decades together. The zoo also imported additional elephants from Canada to expand its captive breeding program.
These changes in social dynamics, and their coerced participation in the zoo’s breeding program, are monumental and traumatizing for our elephant clients. Each day they remain confined by the Pittsburgh Zoo is another day they suffer.
That’s why we’re inviting you to join us for a special live conversation with members of the NhRP's team about our Pittsburgh case and clients: Right to Liberty: Inside the NhRP’s Pittsburgh Elephant Case [[link removed]] .
📅 Date: Tuesday, August 5th
