John, The latest news coming out of the Trump administration is a troubling sign of what’s to come. The director of Homeland Security is threatening local election officials with jail time if they don’t cooperate with unnecessary and potentially illegal demands to turn over their voter files. And the Justice Department’s civil rights chief, Harmeet Dhillon — longtime proponent of voter suppression — announced that the agency would be sending election monitors to six states this summer. Her reasoning? “It’s important to make sure that our voting is accurate so that every citizen who votes has their vote counted equally, without being canceled out by somebody who shouldn’t be voting.” Read that last part again: “Somebody who shouldn't be voting.” Considering her own agency concluded that there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud, it seems like Dhillon may really be talking about eligible voters who might support Democrats. It seems it's no accident that many of the jurisdictions they’re targeting with these “election monitors” — places like Maricopa County, AZ, Hennepin County, MN, and Boston — have a deep base of Democratic voters, Black voters, and other people of color. Let’s be clear, John, the Trump administration is using election monitors — an initiative that has historically ensured people of color have equal access to the ballot box — as a tool of voter suppression. They want to undermine our elections because they’re afraid of what happens if the will of the people is heard. This is a flagrant attempt at voter suppression and intimidation, and we need your help to defeat it. Rush a donation to help ensure we can keep working tirelessly to defend voting rights from the anti-democracy forces working to undermine our democracy.
Thank you, The NDR PAC Team
