Today's a federal holiday because on the eve of the 20th century, workers from across the country fought side by side and made their government recognize the importance of labor. Machinists, carpenters, and people who worked in mills, mines, factories, and more joined together to fight for better wages, better conditions, and a day to honor the power of working people.
The fight for labor continues today. Out on the trail, I've spoken with union members who are teachers, nurses, postal workers, home health aides, janitors, truck drivers, and more.
Labor groups are still fighting for an America that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected. They were on the front lines then, and they are on the front lines now.
This is a crucial moment in the fight for workers in our country. Right now, the rich and powerful are doing everything they can to break the backs of unions.
But unions aren't going away -- not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Unions built America's middle class, and unions will rebuild America's middle class. And I've got plans to rewrite the rules of our economy to give workers more power.
Together, let's make it easier to unionize. Let's give those unions more power, get the Department of Labor and National Labor Relations Board to actually look out for labor, pass a nationwide ban on so-called "right to work" laws, and more.
This is a crucial moment in the fight for workers in this country. It's a time for us to show whose side we're on. I'm proud to say that my campaign is unionized. All Democrats need to stand up and say, without hedging, that we support unions and we support legislation that will protect workers.
Throughout history, workers have gotten together and gotten organized. Kids went from working in factories to going to school. Americans went from working twelve hours a day, six days a week, to the 40-hour week we know now.
We must remember that when working people fight, working people win. And today, fighting shoulder to shoulder for big, structural change is how we're going to create an economy that works for everyone.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
