With fewer than 100 days before the midterms, Trump wants the federal government to build a citizenship database and order the Postal Service to deliver mail ballots ONLY to voters whose names appear on a list created by Trump’s allies. One misspelled name, outdated record, database “error”, or paperwork mismatch could prevent an eligible voter from receiving their ballot. The lower courts have already blocked Trump’s order because the Constitution gives him no authority to seize control of our elections. But now, he has filed an emergency appeal asking the Supreme Court to revive his restrictions in time for the midterms. Trump is racing to change the rules before voters can throw his Republican allies out of Congress. But if the Supreme Court gives him what he wants… eligible voters could discover their ballots are missing only after voting has begun. Election officials will be forced to navigate a last-minute federal mandate, voters will be confused about whether they can participate, and thousands of Americans could be pushed into a bureaucratic nightmare while the clock runs out. The Supreme Court has ordered the Democratic states fighting Trump’s order to respond by August 3. A ruling could follow within days, giving us almost no time to prepare voters for what comes next.
