John,

Happy Labor Day!

Today is a day to celebrate those in our community working tirelessly to create a better and stronger Indianapolis for all. In doing so, we honor the working families who helped build our country and fight for the rights and protections we all enjoy.

After all, our country’s first Labor Day wasn’t about marking the end of the summer season. In 1882, dedicated union organizers held a one day strike to advocate for fairer labor laws — universal rights that we all enjoy (and often take for granted) today.

These moments marked turning points in our country’s labor movement — a movement led by unions. We enjoy weekends, paid vacation time, health care benefits, and eight-hour workdays because unions and their members fought for them.

The history of Labor Day began with a hope for a better future, and it’s that very sentiment that we continue to build upon right here in our city.

In Indianapolis, we are charting a new strategy for inclusive economic incentives so that the jobs we attract help lift up all of our residents. And we are working to leverage the success of our business community to benefit workers and neighborhoods.

That’s why I am proud to have the support of our local unions, such as AFSCME Council 962 and Indianapolis Locals, Indianapolis Professional Firefighters Local 416, Indiana/Kentucky/Ohio Regional Council of Carpenters, Teamsters Local 135, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 103 and 150, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 481, along with so many others. These organizations encompass some of the hardest working men and women in our city, and it is an honor to have their support and work alongside them.

From the very foundation of today’s celebration to our union brothers and sisters who continue the fight for democracy and representation, we recognize that even a small group of people can have a profound, lasting impact on our community.

Thank you.

Mayor Joe
