John,

My mom is a retired public school teacher. As a child, I watched her join with her union to negotiate for increased school funding, smaller class sizes, and improved benefits. She showed me -- in words and deeds -- the power of collective bargaining and the importance of her teacher's union, UTLA.

That's why as we celebrate Labor Day today, I'm asking you to remember the reason we celebrate this day off with family picnics and extra time for relaxation.

Today is a time for us all to remember and celebrate the rich history of unions here in Washington State and throughout the entire country. Thanks to the workers who came before us and fought hard for workers' rights, we have the weekend, no child labor, a federal minimum wage (not yet sufficient), safe working conditions, overtime pay, Social Security, and anti-discrimination laws. None of these were handed to workers on a silver platter. They organized, negotiated, and won fair working standards that we take for granted today.

As your congresswoman, I'm proud to stand with organizations like the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, AFSCME Council 28, Washington Aerospace Machinists, LiUNA NW Region, Service Employees International Union, National Education Association, and the Washington Education Association as they fight to protect working families across the state.

Our work is not yet done. So please, join me today in honoring all of the people who made this holiday possible -- and tomorrow, let's continue to fight alongside them in solidarity.

Thank you,

Dr. Kim Schrier
