I’ve been talking a lot on this Substack recently about the wonderful people who have come out to our town hall tour: teachers, farmers, nurses, retirees, Republicans and Democrats alike, who believe our state is ready for something better. But today, I’d like to talk about the one person we have not seen on the campaign trail: Tommy Tuberville.
I honestly can’t remember the last time Tuberville held a public campaign event in Alabama and answered questions from ordinary people. And I think there’s a reason for that. He doesn’t believe he needs to listen to Alabamians to win this election. I’d like to take a moment to tell you why, and what he plans to do instead.
Tuberville’s got a two-part plan to win this election.
First, he’s going to do everything he can to make it harder for Alabamians to vote. He’s already worked with our state government to rush through new maps that strip away Congressional representation from Black Alabamians. And right now, he’s working in Washington to pass the SAVE Act, a sweeping voter suppression bill that would end vote-by-mail as we know it.
Second, Tuberville plans to buy this election through television ads. He’s accumulated an $8 million war chest that he’s preparing to dump into ads attacking me and spreading fear, division, and hate. For every day from now until November, Alabamians are going to be hearing Tuberville howl through their TVs about how communists and Muslims are coming for their families if they don’t vote for him.
You certainly won’t hear a thing from him about what Alabama’s government can actually do to help ordinary people. You won’t hear about saving our rural hospitals, abolishing the grocery tax, giving our teachers a raise, or lowering costs for working families. But I suppose when you have $8 million, you don’t have to.
So let me tell you about my two-part plan to fight back.
First, we have to vigorously defend Alabamians’ right to vote. We’ve got to support the fight against voter suppression in the courts and in our communities. We have to help Alabamians understand the rules, especially if Tuberville tries to push through any last-minute changes. And if Tuberville succeeds in getting rid of vote-by-mail, we have to make sure that elderly and disabled Alabamians can physically get to the polls.
Second, we have to raise the resources to stand up to Tuberville’s massive war chest. We cannot allow his lies, fear, and division to be the only things Alabamians hear about this election.
