This past July 4 wasn’t just America’s birthday.

It was also the day that Elon Musk’s brainchild, the so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), officially closed up shop.

Not a moment too soon.

DOGE leaves behind a legacy of chaos and devastation, including an estimated 700,000 deaths so far from cuts to USAID.

Musk once claimed that DOGE could save taxpayers $2 trillion. In the end, federal spending actually increased under DOGE.

And DOGE did lasting damage by supporting the MAGA movement’s assault on democracy:

* Plotting to secretly deliver sensitive voter data to extremists trying to overturn election results — while the Trump administration has tried to seize states’ voter rolls.
* Cutting funding for election security.
* Depleting the Census Bureau’s staff by about 1,500 employees — an agency that needs to be fully ready to conduct a fair count in 2030 and help shape fair maps for the next decade.
